This conversion makes sense for exactly one kind of image: photographs that were saved as PNG. A photo stored as PNG is typically many times larger than it needs to be, and JPG will shrink it dramatically with no visible difference.
It makes much less sense for screenshots, logos, diagrams, or anything containing text and hard edges. JPEG compression works by discarding fine detail that the eye tends not to miss in photographs, but around sharp edges and lettering it produces visible fringing and mush. If your PNG is a screenshot, convert it to WebP instead, which handles both cases well.
Transparency cannot survive this conversion. JPG has no alpha channel, so any transparent area is flattened onto a white background. If your PNG is a logo with a transparent surround, the result will be a logo in a white box.
The conversion is one-way in quality terms. JPG discards data permanently, so keep the PNG if it is your only master copy.

Frequently asked questions
Why does my converted screenshot look fuzzy?
JPEG compression is designed for photographs and handles hard edges and text poorly, producing visible fringing. For screenshots use WebP or keep the PNG.
What happens to the transparent background?
It becomes white. JPG cannot store transparency. Convert to WebP if you need both a small file and a transparent background.
How much smaller will the JPG be?
For photographs, often 80-90% smaller than the PNG. For flat graphics the saving is much smaller and the quality cost much higher.
Can I get the PNG back afterwards?
Not at the original quality. Converting the JPG back to PNG restores the file format but not the data JPEG discarded. Keep your PNG originals.
