100KB is the most commonly requested image budget on the web, and for good reason. It is roughly the point at which an image stops being the thing that slows a page down, and it is the limit a great many upload forms settle on.

What 100KB buys you depends almost entirely on dimensions. As a rough guide, 100KB comfortably holds a 1200×800 photograph at good quality, stretches to around 1920×1080 with visible softening in detailed areas, and is generous for anything below 800px wide. The useful way to think about it is bits per pixel: below roughly 0.35 bits per pixel an image starts to look smeared regardless of the encoder.

That is why this tool will reduce the dimensions if it has to. If your source is a 12-megapixel phone photo, holding it at full resolution inside 100KB would produce a mushy, banded mess. Scaling it down first and then compressing gives a visibly better result, and the output dimensions are always shown so you can see what happened.

The search itself is straightforward: the encoder compresses, measures, and narrows in on the highest quality that still fits under your limit, usually settling within four to six attempts. The result is always at or below 100KB, never over.

Frequently asked questions

Will the file be exactly 100KB?

It will be at or just under, never over. Compression cannot target an exact byte count without padding the file, so the tool finds the largest size that still respects your limit. Results typically land within a few percent.

Why did my image get smaller in dimensions?

Because 100KB could not hold it at full resolution without serious quality loss. Below about 0.35 bits per pixel an image looks smeared, so reducing the resolution produces a visibly better result than pushing quality lower.

What resolution fits in 100KB?

As a rough guide: comfortable up to about 1200×800, workable at 1920×1080 with some softening, and generous below 800px wide. Photographs with lots of fine detail need more room than flat graphics.

Can I keep the original dimensions?

Set the resize mode to "Original size" and the tool will hold the dimensions, dropping quality as far as it can instead. For aggressive targets on large images the result may look poor, which is why reducing dimensions is the default behaviour.
