Please read this before converting: animated GIFs are converted to a still image here, using the first frame only. WebP does support animation, but this tool does not yet write animated WebP. If your GIF is a moving image and you need it to keep moving, this is not the right tool and you should look for a dedicated animated converter.
For still GIFs the conversion is very worthwhile. GIF is limited to a palette of 256 colours, which is why photographs saved as GIF look banded and speckled. It also compresses poorly by modern standards. WebP has no palette limit and a far better compressor, so the result is usually both smaller and better looking.
Transparency carries over, with one improvement: GIF transparency is binary, meaning each pixel is either fully transparent or fully opaque, which produces the jagged edges typical of GIF logos. WebP supports partial transparency, so while the conversion cannot invent smooth edges that were never there, it will not add any new jaggedness either.

Frequently asked questions
Will my animated GIF stay animated?
No. Animated GIFs are converted using the first frame only, producing a still image. WebP supports animation as a format, but writing animated WebP is not currently supported here.
Why do GIF photographs look so poor?
GIF is limited to 256 colours per image. A photograph contains far more, so colours are approximated, producing visible banding and dithering speckle. Converting to WebP will not restore the lost colours, but it will stop the problem getting worse.
Is transparency preserved?
Yes. GIF transparency is on-or-off per pixel, and that converts across exactly. WebP also supports partial transparency, which GIF never had.
Can I convert several GIFs at once?
Yes — drop a folder in and download the results as a ZIP.
